Wipe, wipe, Google, Google

I was trying to think of a way to sum up this super-early pregnancy experience, and I think the above words are pretty much it.

After much wiping and googling today I finally decided to call the Kaiser help line and ask them what I should do at this point, rather than filling out an online form for an appointment.  The lady told me to come to the Sunset facility and tell them I had a positive pregnancy test and they would have me take another, fill out paperwork, and get set up for my first appointment.  So I did.  This is what it was like:

The rather bored-looking nurse started in on her “spiel” that I could tell she had probably done a thousand times, all about stuff I know already like the importance of pre-natals, etc.  I was particularly creeped out that she had to ask if I planned on continuing or terminating the pregnancy.  “Continuing, continuing!” I said, trying not to sound shrill.  Can you imagine?

Then they had me watch this oh-so-fun ten minute video about options for genetic screening and tests for birth defects, which almost made me cry when at the end they again mentioned “terminating the pregnancy” if that’s your choice.  Umm…can we not talk about abortion right now???  Kind of freaking me out.

So I did another urine test and they showed me the lines, which were very faint.  A friend assured me that she did the same thing at Kaiser, farther along than me, and she also had faint lines.  I said to the nurse, “So, I guess I’m still pregnant?  It’s not going away?” and she just kind of looked at me.  Luckily as I left she did offer me a “Congratulations.”  It’s amazing, the power of that word.  I SO need to hear it, even from a stranger, even from someone who sees this every day and is bored as crap about it.  I hope despite all the situations these gals see every day they sometimes remember what an amazing blessing and miracle a pregnancy is to someone like me.

And then on to the paperwork.  Creepy!  So I have to answer questions about the baby’s father (can’t I just say N/A?), whether or not I’ve done crank in the last two weeks, if I would rather die than have a blood transfusion, and if I’ve thought about killing myself recently.  It kind of reminds me when I first learned to drive in California and the booklet I got from the state about how to apply for a license had a paragraph in it about providing a thumb print, “or a finger print if you have no thumbs.”  Should someone really be licensed to drive in California if they have no opposable thumbs…?  I’m just asking.

So my first appointment is July 1.  I will continue on with the progesterone since it can’t hurt and can only help support whatever’s happening down there.  And as far as obsessive wiping/googling, I may have gotten most of that out of my system today.  Not a sign of spotting all day, and my symptoms today pretty much feel like a bad period without the cramps; just feel super bloated, heavy, and tired.  Also don’t feel like eating anything and yet am always hungry.  I chalk this up to nerves at this point.  I am just super agitated and haven’t been able to sleep and have to force food down my throat.  But I am working on my breathing techniques and advice from pregnant/mom friends has been invaluable.

I wish I had a nice friendly ob or RE who could run labs for me, do ultrasounds, and hold my hand, but unfortunately I don’t.  If I really wanted to I could probably pay my old clinic to run hcg numbers for me…but the fact is I’m out of town Friday, and a friend of mine told me her hcg numbers never looked right and yet she has two healthy babies, so there’s no point in getting myself all worked up and then having to go perform on the east coast for days.  I think at this point it’s best to just relax and be pregnant.  Again, if anything goes wrong, there’s nothing I can do about it.  My body is doing what my body is doing – it’s out of my hands.  If this one’s going to be strong & sticky, it will make it through these early days.  If not, it will only pave the way for the one who will.

Still giddy thinking about my little buddy boring a hole in my uterus last night and digging on in.  Makes me think of my dog’s face when I wrap her up in blankets and just her little nose sticks out.  I haven’t had any of those pulling sensations today which says to me he/she is burrowed in there. Don’t let go!  Today I had an image of myself sitting on the porch with my red-headed son and telling him I would torture, maim, and kill anyone who tried to hurt him.  Feeling very fierce and maternal already.  Google, google, wipe, wipe.

The first week in this strange new world

I’ll admit it – I am woefully ignorant when it comes down to what to do next.  I honestly never really thought this far ahead!  So today the clinic called me, which was a sweet moment (I always imagined hearing my nurse practitioner call me and say “congratulations!” – she didn’t actually say this, but said what a nice message mine was to get on a Monday morning, so that’s close enough).  They don’t need/want to see me; all they said was to make an appointment with an ob and tell them I’m on progesterone because they may want to take me off it.  After some rooting around in the Kaiser system I saw that unless it’s an emergency I can’t get an appointment for at least two weeks.  So now I’m wondering how urgent this progesterone thing is – I mean, I know it can’t hurt to stay on it (and I probably would anyway even if they told me I don’t need it), and it’s affordable.  But should I be more urgent about seeing someone right now?  There’s no reason to see me right now.  Of course I’d love to get blood tests and ultrasounds to ease my mind, but it’s certainly not necessary, and I’d have to pay through the nose for all that.  So, as a friend told me, I guess all I have to do for the next few weeks is just “be pregnant”.  I think I can do that!

Had a horrible moment last night when I felt some discharge during a movie; after suffering through the last half of it wondering what the heck was going on I ran to the bathroom and saw some very light brown spotting.  I also had been having more twingy/tugging feelings in my right side, so you know what I was thinking – this is it; it’s over before it even began!!!  But of course when I got home I obsessively googled (and wiped) and it appears this is totally normal and is in fact the embryo burrowing into my lining.  It is considered “old blood”.  As long as it’s not bright red and a large amount and isn’t accompanied by lots of cramping, apparently you’re ok.  The clinic confirmed this for me.  And I haven’t had anything since, so huge sigh of relief there.  I imagine I’ll have several episodes like this until I’m out of my first trimester and (hopefully) can relax a little.  Sigh!

I keep wanting to take more pregnancy tests but I know this is stupid – as long as I’m not bleeding, I’m still pregnant.  I keep thinking of this creepy story I read in a Hollywood starlet’s autobiography about how she was pregnant and the baby died but never came out (this was the 50s) and so she carried around a dead fetus for months and nobody knew; apparently this sent her into a psychotic episode.  This haunts me.  What if it dies and doesn’t come out and I sit around thinking I’m pregnant when I’m not?  Does that happen at this stage, or does it definitely come out (eventually)?  Is it true that as long as I’m not copiously bleeding that the baby is still alive & progressing?  I think I have a lot of googling to do!

So my “bitch!” moment didn’t go exactly as I had planned last night at dinner with my friend.  I brought out the pregnancy test after saying “I have something to tell you,” but my friend immediately launched into a long story about this friend she just saw a couple of nights ago who also announced she’s pregnant after she and her husband had been trying for a long time, and then several other people in her life who recently announced pregnancies, etc etc, while I sat there not saying a word.  So for about five minutes I got to hear about everyone else’s pregnancies while I sat there silent.  Oh, don’t get me wrong – my friend was happy for me, and interested in the whole process – I guess I just like my reactions big; I want tears, hugs, congratulations, not just me bringing out my pregnancy test and the first words out of my friend’s mouth being, “that’s so weird, I just went on a double date with my friend and her husband and they told me…..”  Then the night ended weird because I was convinced I was having a miscarriage so I pretty much just said goodbye and then ran to my car.  So as far as reactions from friends, this has to rank about a 3 out of 10.

Tender is the Boob, or, Don't Try This At Home

Boobs have become full and heavy, as I remember them being when I was on the Nuva Ring.  This and a persistent pulling/crampy feeling on the right side of my abdomen is a constant reminder that yeah, that just happened.

So today I am once again operating on almost no sleep.  Why?  I don’t mind admitting it.  I’m full of anxiety.  Got myself all worked up into a tizzy reading about chemical pregnancies.  I am just so, so afraid this is going to “go away” and then I’ll have to start all over again.  And you know what?  This may happen, so I just have to get used to the idea.  Right now I feel like if I lose this baby I’ll die from the grief.  But, I know I won’t die, and I’ll get over it, and I’ll move on.  But the very thought has me almost paralyzed with fear.

So I had the brilliant idea to take another pregnancy test to make sure the pregnancy was “progressing” – somehow I thought if I took the last of the crappy “Rapid Result” tests that was so faint on Friday that it would be dark today.  And guess what?  It was NEGATIVE.  Well, almost negative – on further inspection, I did see that the test line was quite a bit lighter than the test line from Friday, and there was a whisper of a line today, but still – isn’t the concentration of hcg supposed to dramatically increase???  Then came the insane dash to drink more water and take more tests – but of course I had almost no urine, so I tried the last digital test and got an error message and had to throw it out (what a waste!), but had just enough for a FR “Early Result” test which showed a nice strong line.  Then googled “pregnancy tests not getting darker” and learned that sure enough, this is NOT a good gauge of your pregnancy progressing.  There are too many factors – time of day, test type, concentration of urine, etc.  The only way to know for sure is have those beta tests.  I’m assuming the clinic can/will do those for me for the next couple of weeks or however long you have to do it.  So despite my best efforts to avoid waiting for results via phone it looks like I’m back in that boat.

Agh.  What the heck is wrong with me?  Still couldn’t sleep after that.  Shots of adrenaline moving through me.  Right now I wish I could just take a luxurious weekend day and lie in bed and pamper myself.  But I have to run around all day, and then the week starts, and then I go to Boston Friday for a lengthy “tour” with the band, ending in NY.  By the time I get back, god willing, I’ll be six weeks.  Maybe then I can get a heart beat!

One thing I’m going to do today is tell my friend, the one who’s life makes me feel like mine sucks.  The one who just bought the $800,000 house and who will want to spend our dinner together gushing about it.  Oh, I’ll let her do that for a while, then I’m whipping out my positive pregnancy test and slapping it on the table.  I promise I will avoid saying “bitch!” as I do it.  Well, I’ll avoid saying it out loud, anyway.

My What If List

First of all I would like to point out that I am NOT sitting around worrying about these things; I saw a fellow blogger made this list and I thought it would be interesting to explore my own fears/concerns (similar to the post I made about Pregnancy Fears but a little more in depth).  At the moment I am still on the high of yesterday’s BFP (and still can’t believe it, actually; woke up today convinced I had dreamed the whole thing and I was back to my non-pregnant, TTC life).  So I feel great and am NOT worried.  Quite a few of these concerns are very silly and tongue-in-cheek.  But I thought I’d post them here for fun:
