One good thing about being on the west coast is you pretty much get all the results before it gets too late, so other than the ones still waiting to be called (Mississippi, Alaska), we got to see it all. I had the tv on tracking the results from 3 pm on and was riveted. This is the night we SHOULD have had two years ago. But in a weird sort of way the horror we’ve endured the past two years made this possible - the people’s rage was enough to get their butts to the polls. I highly doubt Texas would have gone blue if we had a reasonable Democrat in office. Was it worth it? I’m not sure. All I know is, this is where we’ve landed now.
I’ve observed an interesting phenomenon among certain friends who are so in their ptsd that they can’t enjoy this. Still worried, still unable to experience joy. This isn’t a judgment, just an observation. I’ve been there. But some years ago I decided my old trauma-fueled policy of never allowing myself to be happy about anything for fear of it being taken away was just no way to live. There’s a time for being angry or sad or exhausted and checked out - now is not that time. ESPECIALLY not now when we’ve seen the biggest and most significant election of our lifetime shift nearly everything in our direction - we will never see this again. I’m determined to enjoy the fuck out of this.
I went to the freeway both the day before and the day after (Monday and Wednesday are the usual days but I tend to only go on Wednesdays). The mood on Monday was tentative (I was stoked; others not so much); on Wednesday it was jubilant. It was good to be with people who get it, for a minute.
Right now I’m enjoying the memes and videos of Texans celebrating in the streets and occasionally tearing up, but mostly just feeling relieved and hopeful for next year. Especially basking in the fact that so far the Orange turd seems to be just resigned and giving up. The lawsuits and endless bullshit and claims of fake results just didn’t come. That was surprising. But it was such a repudiation that even he in his dementia knows it would be pointless. Too big to rig!!
